APPROX
Reduction of data size and patch sizes of CATIA surface models

Data transfer through neutral interfaces from different CAD systems into CATIA through neutral interfaces frequently lead to an excessive amount of data and creates CATIA model data that are too large to be handled easily. Breaking down the model to a smaller size using the different approximation techniques offered by CATIA is a tedious and time consuming activity. APPROX can help the Catia user to get this job done in just a fraction of time.

APPROX is a CATIA integrated application that allows the reduction of the data size of CATIA models that have been created from neutral files such like VDAFS or IGES files.

A side effect of interfacing is the fact that other CAD systems create surfaces in such a way that the resulting surface in CATIA is built up from many irregular and small patches. Also faces describing the relevant part of the geometry are often placed on surfaces that are very much larger than needed. And curves are built up from many arcs.

APPROX reduces automatically the data size by reducing and simplifying the existing surfaces and curves.

The reduction of data is achieved applying two different methods:

Reduction:

The supporting surfaces of the relevant faces are reduced (trimmed) to the size necessary to represent the face.

This reduction is not done exactly at the minimal position, but the result surface will have an addendum around that face.

Isolated curves are approximated by another curve with the given tolerance. Curves that represent the boundaries of CATIA surfaces (faces), are approximated prior to projection onto the new surface.

Approximation:

A surface composed of many irregular patches is approximated by another surface of possibly higher degree but with a much smaller number of patches. The tolerance for the approximation is defined by the user.

A curve composed of many arcs is approximated by another curve of possibly higher degree but with a much smaller number of arcs. The tolerance for the approximation is defined by the user.
